Your Guide to Buying Blinds

There’s so many different styles of blinds and so much choice on fabric and colour that it can be overwhelming, making it difficult to choose something suitable. It’s usually helpful to arm yourself with information and create a shortlist of wants and dislikes so you can narrow down exactly what you’re looking for. Once you’re armed with your blind requirements you can either hit the shops or go online, it really depends on how you prefer to shop.

Blinds are a really sophisticated and elegant way to cover your windows in such a way that they fit right in with your décor, whether it’s classic or more modern. Windows are always such a focal point of your room, so emphasis is on blinds that set the scene but don’t overwhelm.

Think About Safety, Light and Privacy

Safety conscious blinds that offer light and privacy control are a must for those with children, so always look for cordless blinds, and those with either solar panels or light filtering elements, so you can give yourself some UV protection during the day.

Here are our tips for making sure you have the right blinds for your home:

  • Light and privacy – if you want your room to block out sunlight and block out light at night, you can opt for one or the either, which ever you prize the most, or you can opt for double blinds that serve both purpose, usually roller blinds that come with two blinds

  • Your budget – how much can you afford to spend? Whatever you decide on will be dependent on that, so make sure you have a clear idea of what it is you want

  • Cleaning – blinds are much easier to clean than curtains, all you need to do is wipe them over. However, there are those blinds, fabric usually, that require a little more care and attention, keep this in mind and figure it into your budget. They may need more in the way of cleaning products and time to keep them in tip top condition

  • Style and taste - think about your preferred style and the décor of each room, is it traditionally classic, or modern and minimalist? Think about that, you can experiment with different colours and patterns and find something that really fits in with your personal style

  • Wooden blinds come in a variety of different finishes and paints, and can give a home a quintessentially classic look, or a really sleek and modern feel for a more contemporary room

  • Insulating blinds can keep rooms warm in winter and light filters or solar panels, as already mentioned, can help protect against strong sunlight. Blockout blinds can help with privacy and light, so it all depends on what you need in terms of functionality.
