Child Safety Considerations When Installing Blinds

Blinds are perfect window coverage, looking both sleek and elegant whilst giving you so much more control over light and privacy. If you have children however, there are safety considerations. There have been accidents involving blinds with children and it just goes to show how dangerous they can potentially be if you have too many dangling cords.

In this post, we’re going to be taking a look at safety considerations when installing blinds so you have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

Cords – What are the Alternatives?

We’ve mentioned cords, and in order to provide proper safety around blinds as far as your children are concerned is to ideally have blinds with no operating cords or chains hanging from your blinds.

Cordless Blinds Could Be the Answer

With cords being so dangerous, cordless blinds are a perfect choice. If they fit within the window frame, like Intu blinds, then they can be easily operated with a separate detachable operating cord or wand. Cordless blinds can also be simply pushed up and down by hand. If you choose cordless blinds you’ll find that you can still have any style of blind such as Venetian, pleated and roller.

Gear Box Blinds

You can also have a gear box with an operating handle which can be used to raise or lower the blind manually. The gear box can be made to match the window frame and/or colours of the blind itself.

Tensioned Cords

You can also have a tensioned cord fitted, which goes into the adjacent wall and the cord is held there. This way you can access it to manipulate the blinds but it’s not left hanging out, which is what usually causes the problems.

Chain Break Connector

A chain break connector consists of a chain that is one length with both of its ends slotting into a small device. When you place consistent pressure on the cord the chain breaks free and relives the tension on the cord, thus operating the blinds.

Electric Blinds Operated by Remote Control

Electric blinds are an excellent choice for windows which are hard to reach and can be operated with a remote control rather than a separate operating rod which you use manually (Intu).

These are some of the ways you can you can still have blinds but keep them child safe, so you don’t have to compromise on style, elegance, light and privacy that make blinds such a perfect choice for modern homes.
