Considerations When Choosing Blinds To Go Alongside Curtains

It's not unusual for blind and curtains to be paired rather than having either one or the other. This is because the two work just as well together as they do apart, so if you do fancy having both, then there's no reason why you shouldn't.

Why settle for curtains alone when you can both?

Curtains aren't always enough on their own, they're not great at keeping draughts out and light can still creep in. Also consider that if they're of a poor quality, they may not be giving you as much protection from light and cold as you'd wish. And what's more, they can't offer a compromise on light and dark, they either block out light completely or allow light in.

Rather than feel you have to choose between the two, you can have both blinds and curtains on the windows. There are plenty of advantages to having both that give you control over light and privacy, and help you to have more control over the temperature in the room.

Why not have both?

With blinds of course you can determine exactly how much light you want to allow in or block out. With a combination of both blinds AND curtains, you can keep your rooms cooler in summer and warmer in winter. If you have radiators beneath the windows, rather than close the curtains and leave the heat trapped in one area, you can leave the curtains open and let the heat circulate the room.

On an aesthetic level blinds can look quite harsh and bland, depending on what you've chosen for your windows. If you feel they leave your room looking a little cheerless, then curtains can can add a little warmth.

Consider the elements....

Naturally, if you do decide on a curtain and blind combo, there will be other elements in your rooms you need to take into consideration. Think about the colour scheme, the furnishings, and the themes you may have chosen for your room e.g. classic or contemporary, minimalist or antique with plenty of vintage furnishings. Try to pick colours and styles that will compliment the way you've furnished your rooms.

Steer Clear of This Combo in Bathrooms and Kitchens

There will be certain rooms that are perfectly suited to both blinds and curtains and those that aren't. The best place to avoid having this combination of window coverings is the bathroom and kitchen. For both these rooms we're talking both moisture and smells which can get trapped in the fabrics. Not a pleasant thoughts. Blinds alone are probably best for bathrooms and kitchens, where cleaning is minimal and they're made from a material that won't absorb moisture.
